East Wind Rain: A Pictorial History of the Pearl Harbor Attack

A picture is worth a million words
This is a great book. It has excellent map, diagrams and oral histories.

I have a dear freind who was there during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and he give it approval which is saying much.

Walter said tehre are only two errors tha he could find. One was a story about a nurse getting a Purple Heart for working hard (Walter said not true) the second error was the chart on page 113. he said the helena and Ogala was shown too far south on the wharf. Walter said they moved further during the attack and Walter had a hand in moving them. He said the Helena was on the wharf and tied up outside of it was the Ogala. Walter said a torpedo went under the Ogala, and blasted the Helena and the resulting blast tore a huge hole in the Ogala causing it to sink.

Walter took the lead in taking the lines off the Ogala and Helena, and tied the Ogala to the wharf while the Helena slipped to the south. The Ogala later capsized, thus Walter helped save the helena from possibly sinking!

Helena thus moved to the south after the bombing.

I recommend this book highly, thank you Mr Stan Cohen.

This is a superior historical review, in pictorial form.
This is a superior historical review, in pictorial form, of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The 50th Anniversary edition has been greatly expanded to include diagrams and photographs that were not in the original edition. Although of a pictorial nature, the text is scholarly, extremely well-researched and concise. The maps and previously unpublished photographs place the attack in an accurate historical context. This book is in the "must read" classification and it is another diamond among author Stan Cohen's many diamonds.

Encounters With Beauty In Hawaii
What I found particularly fascinating about this book was the way it linked specific places throughout the islands, which can be seen today, with historical lore and people from Hawaii's past. I also enjoyed the way the book brought to life a lot of the mystical, spiritual, side of the Hawaiian geography and tradition. Long ago, when I first visited the beautifully desolate northwest coast of the big island of Hawaii, I had this strange sense that I was not alone. After reading this book, I realize that I, indeed, was not. The spirits of Kamehameha the great, and other warriors of Hawaii's past, live on here.

This book made my vacation incredible!
This is a great book full of beautiful photos. Best of all it guides you to the really interesting places on all the different islands. There are maps, and directions, and under each site stories are told about the site's amazing past. There are interviews with the locals describing their spiritual beliefs regarding the site. You could enjoy this book just to read about Hawaiian history and all the fascinating things that have gone on in these spiritual places. I couldn't put it down.
The book also led me to some really nice places like a blue freshwater pool right by the ocean.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Fables from the Sea (Kolowalu Book)
Published in Hardcover by University of Hawaii Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Leslie Ann Hayashi and Kathleen Wong Bishop
Average review score:

Sharp Writing, Beautiful Illustrations
This book is a wonderful combination of storytelling, illustration, and biology! Kids meet all sorts of creatures from the Hawaiian seascape-eels, shrimp, limpets, squid, seabirds, and more--and learn valuable life lessons told in a clear, humorous text.

Many of the fables teach respect for kids' peers and the environment-while celebrating both. This is a book to read-and re-read with enjoyment.

Learn a lesson and smile!
Fables span time and space; they date back many centuries and can be found in all cultures. Handed down from generation to generation, the purpose of a fable is to teach a particular lesson, value, or to give sage advice. They also provide us with the opportunity to laugh at our foolishness and cry and comfort each other when faced with tragedy. They connect us not only with the world of nature and other cultures but ultimately they define what makes us human. In Fables from the Sea, the author has studied what the sea has to offer and discovered ten lessons, reminding us of the importance of kindness, honesty and perserverance. Her illustrator, a childhood friend, has taken those lessons and illustrated them in the most splendid and vibrant watercolors. A must for readers of all ages! Even adults can be reminded about what happens to complaining cowries! Like Fables from the Garden, Fables from the Sea is a beautiful and lasting gift, just one of the sea's many treasures. A Field Guide to Pacific Coast Shells, Including Shells of Hawaii and the Gulf of California (Peterson Field Guide Series, 6)

Seashells are the most exquisite of all architecture

As a child growing up on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and obsessed with seashells, the gastropods of the Pacific Ocean beckoned to me more strongly than any seaweed bedecked sirens in my 8th grade Latin book.

And this was the book that fueled by imaginations. The heck with Botticelli and his "Venus on a half-shell" or Cyndy Crawford's teeth -- this book illustrates and explains some of the most beautiful pieces of calcium carbonate ever secreted by man or mollusc.

You definetly need this book if you plan to visit Maui !
My friends and I just returned from Maui and this book was sent from the heavens! If you are thinking of traveling to Maui or Lanai, this is the guide for you. It is very detailed and extremely helpful from where to stay, where to eat, where the best beaches are and how to get to them, to even what type of vehicle to rent so that you get the most from your vacation. I have purchased guide books in the past and have been a little disapointed on the lodging portion; but this book was very accurate and gives you plently of choices. We stayed at several that were in the book and we were thrilled! And as far as what to see or where to go while your in Maui or Lanai, this book is right on the money. It will even let you know to which locations you should pack a lunch!

Outstanding book...don't leave home without it !
This is the best, most comprehensive and accurate guide book for the Hawaiian traveler. The book is easy to read and makes planning your vacation activities a breeze. The dining guide in particular is outstanding. If your time on the island is limited, the itineraries section can be very helpful, with 1,3 or 5 day "must see" ideas. The book is reasonably priced and worth every penny !

everthing you need to know
This book is the bible for anyone traveling to hawaii. You can plan your vacation based on the activities you like and you will not be disappointed by their recommendations. The hotel reviews are very accurate and I used the restuarant reviews exclusively. Even on my second trip I found the book to be extremely useful.

Great book, great island
We are planning our first trip to Hawaii and have been amazed on the amount of information that is out there. This book summarizes all of the hawaiian islands and helped us plan our 3 week trip. It reviews not only hotels, but restaurants, activities and hot spots to see. All for less than $20! I feel that it is a must for any traveler to the island.

Hawaii With Kids -- Don't Leave Home Without This Book
Copious notes on what activities and attractions are available and of interest to kids and other family members. Only shortcoming is minimal references to restaurants and accommodations. Author selects top 10 day trip ideas for each island and they were dead on for our family of five.

Easy to read, up-to-date information and great suggestions!
It is very easy to find age appropriate activities for your children. The book is arranged in an easy to follow format which allows you to find special stops coming up as you drive. A great quick reference that we used many times a day while vacationing on Oahu.

Green Mango Magic (An Avon Camelot Book)
Published in Hardcover by Camelot (November, 1998)
Author: Sylvie Hossack
Average review score:

Enjoyable Reading!
The characters were well-crafted, the setting was vivid, and the plot moved along quickly in this heart-warming book. Maile comes to terms with her own problems while helping her cancer-striken friend, Brooke, come to terms with her illness. Maile has a loving family and good friends that help her through.

Thoughtful and intruiging
This is a charming, thoughtful story of two very different girls--a native Hawaiian and a haole girl from Seattle--and how their friendship grows as they each face difficult issues. Having lost her mother in a tsunami, Maile (My-lee) resents her father leaving her with her grandmother in order to go to the mainland with his new wife. As Maile contemplates her hurt and anger, Brooke comes to live on the island. Brooke, as Maile quickly discovers, has cancer--and Maile suddenly has much to ponder about healing and forgiveness. The details and language are wonderful, and Sylvie beautifully captures her characters' thoughts and feelings. I look forward to more books from her!

Hawaii Diet Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Halpax Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: Terry, Shintani and Carol Devenot
Average review score:

Excellent, and truly works.
I bought both the Shintani books, though this is really not necessary because they're almost identical. The diet works so well that I was astonished when the results were almost immediate with regard to my blood sugar and my blood pressure. A type II diabetic for over five years, my blood sugar dropped into the normal range within one week allowing me to eliminate 500mg of Metformin. My blood pressure came down to low normal instead of high normal.

Almost all recipes tried have been quite good, not at all boring. After 14 days I have lost about 8 pounds, but my main concern had been my sugar and BP, not my waist! A couple of recipes have been a bit unrealistic portion-wise ("serves 8"? Eight elves, maybe!) but one soon learns to understand better the theory behind the diet and one can do a bit of label-reading and make minor changes. And, once learned, it's just so much common sense!

Try it... You might love it. But you still have to work hard and be careful about the fat, salt and sugar. (After reading closely all labels on cans you may learn to shudder at what is being put into those cans....) And let's not forget that old hated word EXERCIZE. Also remember that one must remain on this diet forever with only an occassional juicy hamburger! Good luck!

Great follow up to Dr. Shintani's Eat More Weight Less Diet
Once again Dr. Shintani gives us the benefit of his knowledge and experimentation. Hawaii Diet Cookbook takes Dr. Shintani's Eat More Weigh Less Diet into a tropical paradise and provides us with a book of wonderful Polynesian and Asian meals. Each recipe is easy to fix and very tasteful. In this book, Dr. Shintani offers testimony from people who followed this diet and decreased their blood pressure, were able to discontinue medications for diabetes and dropped weight. It is a great book for those who love to cook and eat. I have recommended this book to friends and relatives. Thank you, Dr. Shintani.
